Kodak film rolls are cheap and common, you can (you should) buy them on Amazon. Kodak ColorPlus 200 ISO and UltraMax are very suggested to beginners. Also Fujicolor C200, you can make a bulk order of them for nothing. Simply to use. Then you can go for some Porta 400, beautiful for portrait.

This is my Contax Aria; a compact electronic SLR originally released in 1998 (I believe). For a camera that that was aimed at the high end consumer market, it has a lot of the features you'd expect to find on a more professional level SLR of that time - multiple metering modes, a top shutter speed of 1/4000, up to 3 fps continuous shooting etc.

Regardless of the damage prevention aspect, for B&W film you should have a UV filter because B&W film is pretty good at picking up UV light. Your lens glass absorbs a lot of it, but some will make it to the film, and most films are pretty sensitive to those wavelengths of light.
